New Scallop Square Extended Totes

I think many of us have seen the sweet Scallop Square bags that can be created with the Big Shot Die Cut Machine and the Scallop Square Die from Stampin’ Up! (check out my bag from a year ago).

But this winter I decided that I needed a small tote that’s a little wider than the regular Scallop Square size.  No problem!  I’ve come up with a solution and created a Video Tutorial to show you how to make these bags on your own.

Here are 2 Video Tutorials for the Extended Scallop Square Tote.  Part 1 includes directions on cutting your fabric with the Big Shot Die Cut Machine.  Part 2 shows the sewing instructions for assembling your bag.  Watch for Part 3, coming tomorrow, for directions on creating the Eyelet Flower Embellishment.

Yes, be very afraid, I have created a tutorial on sewing.  **Disclaimer: I am NOT a seamstress, I just play one on tv** :)

And here is Part 2 of the Video Tutorial:

The finished tote comfortably fits a 4-1/4 x 5-1/2″ card, so this is the perfect tote for carrying a few swap cards at a Stampin’ Up! Demonstrator Event, or for making a really special set of cards for a gift.

Stampin’ Up! Supply List: (order 24-7 through my Online Store)

  • Big Shot Die Cut Machine (includes regular Cutting Mats) (113439)
  • Scallop Square Die (115950)
  • Sweet Stitches Designer Fabric (121818)
  • Early Espresso Stitched Grosgrain Ribbon (115615)

As I’m posting this today, I’m also working on finishing 10 of these Extended Square Totes for the demonstrators on my LovenStampfuls Team who are headed to the Stampin’ Up! Leadership Conference in Nashville this week.  Here’s hoping there’s not too much snow for those Southern gals!

Dress Up Your Bag, Stampin’ Style

Need a fun ornament for the purse from yesterday?  The flower below was cut and quilted from the same fabrics that I used for the purse, this time using the Flower Folds Big Shot Die (see it online).

These flowers are perfect for tying on a purse handle or backpack–they’re quite the rage!  They’d also make a cute headband, if you’re 10 years old or if you can get away with wearing one in your hair.

The small Scallop Circle in the center is from the Scallop Circle #2 Die (see this one online).  Each flower layer is made up of three pieces — the bottom fabric layer, the middle cotton batting layer and the top fabric layer.  All 3 pieces were top stitched together by sewing machine.

After all the 3 flower pieces were stitched, I used scissors to cut a slit in the center of each, then put the 1-1/4″ Striped Grosgrain Ribbon through the flower center.  I tied a small knot in the center and fed the ribbon end back through the holes.

Thanks to Jill Olsen for the inspiration on this project!  After seeing some of her quilting projects at the Founder’s Circle Retreat the last few years, I’ve been inspired to brush the dust from my own sewing machine.

Every Crafter’s Wish List

What should every crafter have on a Wish List?  My top pick is the Big Shot Die Cut Machine.

The Scallop Square die for the Big Shot is probably in my top 5 favorite dies, and for fabric or quilting projects, I think it’s my #1 favorite.

My most recent project was a quilted Bible cover.  This time I made a different kind of quilted project — a small tote or purse.

This is actually a pretty easy project–and quick, too!  The Big Shot will cut 6-8 layers of upholstery or quilting fabric at one time.  And I can cut 4-6 layers of the cotton quilting batting with no problems.

From uncut fabric to finished purse, this bag didn’t take all that long to complete–only about an hour.

For directions on how to put together purses like this, check out my post from last winter.  The only difference is that here I added a layer of natural cotton batting between the front and back pieces of each purse panel.

Love the Weather: Jeans & a T-Shirt, Stampin’ Style

Are you having great weather where you live this week?  Wow–we are enjoying temps in the low 70′s and sunshine all day.  My favorite weather is “jeans & a t-shirt” weather, so I’m loving this!

Plus I have a sweet & quick way to turn a plain tshirt and jeans into the ones that your daughter actually wants to wear… you know, the ones that go from the dryer to her body and never actually make it to the drawer!

These little Scallop Circle flowers were easy to create from Scallop Circles cut with the Big Shot Die Cut Machine.

I used the scallop circle piece from the Pennant Die (about 2-1/2″ across) for the flowers and cut 2 scallop circles for each blossom. (have you seen some of my other Pennant Die projects?)

Fold the scallop circle in half, then gather in the center to make the flower more dimensional.  I used my sewing machine to stitch an ‘x’ across two folded scallop circles to make the flower, then added a cut circle in the center.

These are really simple–you could also stitch by hand. Every little girl needs an outfit with extra shabby chic accents. Maybe every big girl, too!

Fabulous Flowers Can Be Felt, Too!

During my last week of Summer Scrap Camp <<sniff, sniff>>, I wanted to give the kids a chance to use what we’ve learned all summer to put together some projects of their own.  And since we were back to having all girls for this session (unlike last time), we were a-okay to do flowery projects again.

I put out felt, fleece, hot glue and a variety of Big Shot Dies, and let the girls go to work.  We probably could have had a short lesson on how to cut fabric efficiently to create as few wasted pieces as possible, but oh well, we all had a good time ;-)

Some girls chose to make the Faster Fleece Flowers with the Scallop Circle Die (remember those?), and some girls made wonderful layered flowers with the Flower Folds Die.

We also used the Flower Folds Die to create some Back-To-School treats with Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups (check those out).

Kayleigh’s flower here really impressed me with its perfect color combination.  What an eye for color!  She cut out the flower layers with the Flower Folds Die (3 flower sizes starting with the smallest one) and layered them with hot glue.

The girls created flowers for all kinds of embellishments–hair clips, key chains, backpack tags.  But my favorite was the bookmark version.  Just make the flower of your choice, then attach it to the end of a 10″ piece of wide ribbon.  The ribbon tail marks your place in the book and the flower hangs over the front as decoration!

Fleece Flowers: Faster and Fresher with Scallop Circles

This week is the Stampin’ Up! Convention in Salt Lake City — that’s 4 full days of thousands of crazy stampers all in one place.

One of my favorite parts of Convention is trading ideas with other Demonstrators.  We like to call it “swapping” and we swap everything from cards to scrapbook pages to 3-D items.

Stampin’ Up! has a fun evening event planned for us with a Flower Power theme, so of course I had to come up with a fun “flower power” type item to swap!  The Fleece Flowers I’ve shared recently are great (check out that Video Tutorial) but I wanted to come up with something a little quicker.

Hence the “Faster & Fresher Fleece Flower” was born!  These little flowers are created using the Scallop Circle Die.  The steps are simple:

  1. Cut a Scallop Circle from polar fleece fabric using the Big Shot Die Cut Machine
  2. Cut the Scallop Circle into a spiral, about 5/8″ wide all the way to the center
  3. Use hot glue to attach a 2″ fleece circle to the back of the spiral (cut with the Big Shot Circles #2 Die)
  4. Use hot glue to attach leaves cut from the Big Shot Island Floral Die

But I can do one better than just directions and photos.  Here’s a Video Tutorial that I created to teach you how to make these simple flowers using fabric and your Big Shot Die Cut Machine.

Want to see other Video Tutorials?  I have more!  (click here to check them out)

And be sure to check back this week for more posts about the Stampin’ Up! Convention!
