Pleasant Poppies Gift Bag: I *heart* watercoloring

Pleasant Poppies is another of the gorgeous full-size images currently available from Stampin’ Up! (see it online – 129499). Last week I mentioned a few tips for using large stamps on small projects.  Today I have a couple more technique tips for you: the Spotlighting Technique and a Watercolor Refresher!  Both techniques are wrapped up in this paper lunch sack turned into a Gift Bag.

This project was actually one from my Stamps in the Mail Club during the last round.  If you haven’t ever participated, get ready for the next round.  Signups begin in April for the May Round!

Pleasant Poppies Spotlighting Technique TutorialSpotlighting Technique

Spotlighting is a nice way to highlight a certain part of a larger stamp, like with Pleasant Poppies or Swallowtail.

  1. Stamp your large image on the background.
  2. Stamp again on scrap paper and use a Circle Punch to punch out the piece(s) you’d like to highlight.
  3. Color the circles differently from the background and match them back onto your main image.

Here are a few more Spotlighting Technique card ideas on my blog.

Refresher Technique Focus: Watercolor

Pleasant Poppies Watercolor Background: technique tipsWatercolor Wonder Crayons (WWC) combined with an Aquapainter or paintbrush allow an artist to create realistic watercolor effects.  Here are few pointers to perfecting your technique:

  • Gently wipe the wet tip of the AQP across the end of the WWC, picking up color
  • Begin with the lightest color layer: use a light touch and extra water to thin out your color
  • Add a 2nd color layer, either of the same tone or different.  Be sure to leave some of the lightest layer showing
  • Add a 3rd color layer as the darkest layer, using the most pigment from the crayon and the least amount of water
  • Consider your shadows – which direction does the light in your picture shine? Objects with a shadow around the outer stamped black line look more dimensional and realistic

Paper Lunch Sack = Gift Bag. How to make your own gift wrapping.Curious about how the gift bag works?  I have a Video Tutorial that shows how to make these Card Topper Gift Bags.

Last Day: Holiday Catalog & Scentsational Season

My friend Becky Strater made these adorable Gift Card holders as a twist on our Stamp Club project from earlier this month (the Punch Art Elf).  I loved them so much that I wanted to share them with you.  I know Christmas is over, but so (almost!) is the Holiday Catalog.  TODAY is the last day to order!

So if you love these little trees, they were cut using the Scentsational Seasons Framelits (love them – see them online – 127814) and today is the last day to order these shapes and the coordinating stamp set.

Did you see how Becky made the 3d trees?  She cut out 3 tree shapes from the Framelits: 2 of designer series paper (remove the trunks) and one from Old Olive card stock.  Then she folded the designer paper trees in half and glued the shapes together.

Pretty neat, eh? If you’d like the directions for the Two Tags Die gift card holder, they’re here on my blog.

Don’t forget — last day to order these shaped framelits is today!!  While you’re at it, be sure to check out the Clearance Rack for extra bonus bargains, while supplies last!

Sweet Treat Heart Cups – Clearance Rack Bonus!

Have you seen the 15 NEW items on my online Stampin’ Up! Clearance Rack?  They were added yesterday — so shop now for best selection, since items are available “while supplies last”.

One of my fav items?  The Heart Sweet Treat Cups!  And on the Clearance Rack, they’re only $0.59 for a box of 12.  Use them to make treats for a classroom or for friends & neighbors.  Everyone loves a treat!

Here’s a fun way to use your Heart Sweet Treat Cups (Clearance Rack item, only $0.59 for 12 – see them online) and the matching Full Heart Punch (see it online). Did you know the Sweet Treat Cups have the adhesive on them already?  Yeah, I know!! They could hardly be easier!!

These use the Scallop Squares Duo Die (120903) for the background, as well as the Sweetheart stamp set (it’s on the Clearance Rack! see it online – 120780).  The tiny hearts are punched from the Red Glimmer Paper (see it online) which looks even BETTER in person.  Absolutely gorgeous, and a little goes a long way.

The sticks are lollipop sticks from any big box store — just add a little flag banner with a heart, adhere them to the back and you’re set!

One last tip on the Sweet Treat Cups?  Don’t overfill them.  My strategy is to fill them until they look even, then remove one more M&M.  (and it eat — you wouldn’t put it back in the bag, right?) But this way you’re sure there won’t be too much stress on the adhesive on the back of the Sweet Treat Cup.

Need more Sweet Treat Cup ideas?  Check a few out on my blog.  Remember, these are currently on the Clearance Rack, so they’re available only while supplies last!

Happy Stamping!

Stamps: Sweetheart (Clearance Rack – limited time); Paper: Real Red, Whisper White, Pink Pirouette, Red Glimmer Paper; Ink: Real Red; Accessories: Heart Sweet Treat Cups (Clearance Rack – limited time), Full Heart Punch, Scallop Square Duo Die, Big Shot, Small Heart Punch,

Jumbo Sticky Rounds: Twisted Fabric Flowers

Sometimes it’s fun to make a card that will never go through the mail — something special that you’d include with a package or hand to a special friend.  This month at Stamp Club we made Jumbo Sticky Round flowers (see the Rounds online) with the Flirtatious Designer Fabric (see it online – 122335) and attached them to hand-made vellum envelopes (vellum card stock – 101856).

Jumbo Sticky Round Flower Directions:

  1. Begin with a 1 ¼” x 27” strip of fabric.
  2. Twist one end of the fabric to about ¼” wide and tie a small knot.
  3. Press the knot into the center of a Jumbo Sticky Round
  4. Continue twisting the fabric and pressing into the Sticky Round.  Turn the Sticky Round and the flower will grow.
  5. Peel from the backing paper and add to a die cut flower layer or a punched circle.

The vellum envelope opens and a regular note card fits inside – 5 1/2″ x 4 1/4″. The You Are Loved stamp set (see it online – 123779) is a great one for collage stamping.
