Today’s Crafting Joy: October Paper Pumpkin Kit

Paper Pumpkin alternate project idea by LovenStamps

Just a quick share this morning because I am in love with the October Paper Pumpkin kit!!  I’ll admit, when my box first arrived and I had that fun “Christmas morning” moment of opening the orange box and pulling back the tissue paper, I wasn’t immediately wow’d.  But guess what? I started stamping and just made 40 note cards from my kit (I added the Notecards & Envelopes (107311)) and I STILL have 6 pie boxes left over!

Don’t know about Paper Pumpkin? It’s a monthly creative escape delivered right to your doorstep for just $19.95 per month (Yes! Shipping is free!).  The stamps, ink and pre-cut papers are all included, ready for you to pull out and stamp.  All you need to add is scissors to make the suggested project!

There are some amazing pieces in this month’s kit.  And to save you from my mistake, yes, those tiny little striped strips are self-adhesive.  No, you don’t have to try to put SNAIL on the back of them… (hello, Meg?) :)

If you haven’t subscribed to Paper Pumpkin yet, you can still get a subscription.  Just visit my site here, and you’ll automatically select me as your demonstrator.  Or use the regular link and be sure to pick me (Meg Loven, IL) as your demo.

This actual kit shipped to Paper Pumpkin subscribers in October, so you may have missed it.  But good news!  If you really want it, you can get it (while supplies last) as a refill kit (minus the stamps/ink – just the card stock pieces & embellishments).  But refill kits are only available for order to Paper Pumpkin subscribers.

No worries though – you probably want to subscribe to Paper Pumpkin anyway!  So subscribe to Paper Pumpkin via my site here, and then you can place your online order through my store for the October Sweet As Pie Refill Kit (136922).

Stampin’ Techniques 201: Faux Layering

Stampin Techniques Tutorial: Faux Layering by LovenStamps, with the Stampin Up Festival of Trees set

Picture this: you’re creating a card.  It’s not quite right.  Do you add another layer?  Find some Designer Series Paper?  Wait!  I’ve got it!  You need a faux layer – it’s perfect!  So grab your Stamping Sponges (101610) and your 1″ Square Punch (124094) and let me show you how it’s done.

Stampin Up Festival of Trees: a Faux Layering Technique Tutorial by LovenStamps for Stamps in the Mail Club

The first thing you’ll want to do is create a mask for your sponging.  Sure, you can stick post-it notes on your card front and try to line them up straight (good luck with that), but wouldn’t it be easier to have a reusable mask that will get you a straight line every time?

Make Your Own Faux Layering Mask

  1. Cut a piece of card stock wider than your project layer, but the same height.  In my card, the Whisper White card front is 4″ x 5 1/4″ so my mask is 4″ x about 7″.
  2. Grab your 1″ Square Punch and slide it up from the bottom of the mask.  Punch a hole.  Anywhere.
  3. Now move the Square Punch to the side and punch again to make the hole wider.  Repeat across the whole mask to create a wide narrow window.

Really, see how simple?  Good news — if you’re a visual learner, you can watch my How-To video tutorial here below!  Okay, let’s move on to the faux layering part.

Faux Layering Tips & Tricks

  1. Cut your Stamping Sponge into 8-10 pieces (like slicing a pie).  I find the Craft Scissors (108360) to be perfect for this task.  You only need a small piece of sponge to do the trick, and this way you can keep a bunch of sponges handy for different colors.
  2. Press the sponge piece into your ink pad to pick up ink.
  3. Line your mask up with your card stock and start sponging by pressing the sponge onto the mask, then dragging it into the window.  You don’t want to press the sponge onto the window first — it will leave a big smudge.  The shadow effect is created when the sponging is darkest at the edge of the faux layer and lighter towards the center.

See?  Still pretty simple if you know the tricks (and I just shared them with you!).  Again though, I think you’ll find it helpful to see the process in action.  Here’s a video tutorial for one of the projects from my October Stamps in the Mail Club.

Christmas Card Layout #276: Bookmark Cards

Wondrous Wreath stamp set: Christmas card bookmark idea with the Filigree Frame Embossing Folder by LovenStamps

How are your Christmas cards coming along?  The Wondrous Wreath stamp set (135047) is a gorgeous choice for all kinds of cards.  If you want to cut out the wreath, you’ll want the Wonderful Wreath Framelits (135851) – pretty amazing.

Instead of cutting out the wreath here, I stamped it on a bookmark made with the Scallop Tag Topper Punch (133324).  It doesn’t show perfectly in the photo, but the wreath is actually shiny – stamped with the Silver Encore Ink Pad (132142).

Looking for more Christmas ideas?  Be sure to check my blog posts for Christmas inspiration! You can also browse the Holiday Catalog for the latest & greatest stamp sets, colors and accessories for the season.

Holy Bats, Batman! It’s a BAT box!

Halloween Bat Box: the Curvy Keepsakes Die is so adaptable! Bat & fun by LovenStamps

Earlier this week I had a FABULOUS evening crafting with friends.  Yup, that’s what a Stampin’ Up! party is all about!!  I brought all the supplies to make a couple of fun projects, and this little Halloween bat box was one of them.  Do you recognize the Curvy Keepsake Box Thinlits Dies (135853)?

This is actually a pretty simple punch art creation. Let me get you started!

How to Make A Batty Box: a curvy keepsake box framelit project by LovenStamps

Be sure to pin the graphic above so you’ll be able to find it again.  And if you haven’t already, be sure to follow me on Pinterest!

Start with a medium sized die from the Ovals Collection Framelits (129381) and cut an oval from Basic Black card stock (121045)).

Cut the oval in half on a diagonal.

Use a 1-1/4″ Circle Punch (119861) to cut small curves from the bottom side of each ‘wing’.

Assemble the box and fold a little tab back at the ‘shoulder’ end of each wing.  Adhere the wings to the box.

Add the eyes and punch the ears and fangs with the Petite Pennants Builder Punch (122361).  After adding the ears to your box, use scissors to clip away the handle between the ears.

Draw the smile and eye sparkle with the White Stampin’ Chalk Marker (132133).

Stamp a little message and punch with the Word Window Punch (119857).  Tie on the batty wing and you’re all set!

Stampin Techniques 201: Faux Watercolor

For All Things: Faux Watercolor techinque & video tutorial, by LovenStamps for Stamps in the Mail Club with Meg

Sometimes it’s fun to bend the rules a bit and try something a little bit different. Smeary images? Oh yes! Let’s try it and call it a technique… how about Faux Watercolor? Trust me. You’re going to like it! (And we’re not talking about eating your vegetables here, as in, “You’re going to LIKE it!”)

I’m using the For All Things stamp set (135155) from the Holiday Catalog (browse online). This stamp set is also the one that you’ll get with my September Stamps in the Mail Club kit. Never fear, it’s not too late to get your own kit and make these projects at home. Just drop me a note if you’d like one, or check the details on my website: Stamps in the Mail Club.

The Faux Watercolor Technique is simple:

  1. Stamp on Watercolor Paper
  2. Spray with water
  3. Allow to dry

That’s about it! There are definitely a few tips though – and you can see ‘em in action in my video tutorial below!

If you’re viewing via email subscription, click here to see the post & video directly on my blog or here directly on YouTube

This is one of the 4 projects from my September Stamps in the Mail Club Kit. So if you’d like to make this card at home (plus 3 other fun projects), then be sure to fill out the web form here. I’ll send you a PayPal invoice and your stamps, ink and projects kit will be on their way to your doorstep!

I’d love to stamp with you by mail!
